OUR PURPOSE

The purpose of Alameda Church of Christ is to make Jesus known by living as disciples, growing as disciples, and making disciples.

Who We Are

"Welcome to Alameda and thank you for your interest in our church family! It is our constant prayer that God will bless us with the opportunity to share faith and life with more and more people, and you are an answer to that simple prayer. The Alameda Church of Christ exists for the purpose of making Jesus known by living as disciples, growing as disciples, and making disciples. As His disciples, we aspire to exalt God in worship and giving, encounter God in prayer, encourage one another in fellowship, edify others through acts of service, equip believers through teaching and ministry, and evangelize our community and the world through proclamation and missions. We call these expectations the “Six E’s” of discipleship. Simply put, our commitment is to encourage, equip, and empower our members to faithfully carry out their God-given purpose. At Alameda, you will find a congregation of authentic Christians who are doing their best to follow Jesus. We are not perfect—far from it—but we have placed our faith in a perfect Savior who helps us overcome our weaknesses and gives us the strength to walk through a fallen and broken world. Our lives have been so changed by Christ that we want everyone to experience the hope, joy, peace, purpose, grace, and love that we have found in Him. I hope you will decide to join us in our efforts to share the hope-filling message of Christ with our community and the world."

Alameda Church of Christ is...

  • A Bible-based church. We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and we submit to its teachings in our worship, ministry, and personal lives because the Bible reveals God’s character, our purpose, and life’s meaning. We do not look to any outside creed for direction and we are free of denominational power structures. We simply desire to be the kind of church prescribed in the New Testament.
  • A safe place to ask questions. All of us have questions about God, Jesus, and the Bible, but sometimes we don’t know where to go for answers. At Alameda, people are free to ask any question they want and admit their struggles without the fear of being laughed at or scorned. Here, we realize that we are all sinners in need of a Savior.
  • A loving family and a community of Christian servants. At the Alameda Church of Christ you will find loyal friends who will be there for you when you need them. We also encourage each other to use our gifts and resources to serve God and brighten the lives of others.

A Brief History of Alameda...

Central Church of Christ began meeting at the turn of the century in a house on Tonhawa and Crawford Streets. In the 1930’s, the congregation moved to a structure across the street from the original site. In 1967, Central Church of Christ moved to its present location at 801 E. Alameda. In 1945, 17 members of the Central church established the University Church of Christ near the OU campus to better serve students’ needs. They purchased the old Methodist Church building at Webster and Linn in 1947 and in 1965 replaced the old building with the existing structure. In 1957, Central Church of Christ, in a joint effort with the University Church of Christ, established the Westside Church of Christ at Boyd and McGee Streets in Norman. In 1979, the Central and University congregations merged as the Alameda Church of Christ. Because of the available space and the great location, the new congregation chose the Central building and grounds for its new location. The University building was sold, with the funds being applied to the purchase of additional land and the construction of additional facilities. Today Alameda continues to be a dynamic congregation with a broad range of ministries to meet the needs of our diverse community.

What We Believe

GOD

God is the creator and sovereign ruler of the universe and all that is in it. (Genesis 1:1, 26-27)

He has eternally existed in three distinct personalities: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three co-exist as the one and only God. (Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Ephesians 4:4-6)

JESUS CHRIST

Jesus Christ is the Son of God, who came to the earth to save us from our sins. (Matthew 1:21; Luke 19:10; John 3:16)

He lived a sinless life, even though he was tempted in every way, and willingly offered himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all men and women by dying on a cross. (Philippians 2:5-11; Hebrews 4:14-15)

He demonstrated His power over sin and death by rising from the dead after three days. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)

Shortly after His resurrection, Jesus ascended to Heaven and promised to return. (Acts 1:9-11; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)

Salvation can only come through Jesus Christ. (Acts 4:12; Colossians 1:15-23)

THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. (Acts 2:38; 1 Corinthians 3:16; Ephesians 1:13-14)

The Holy Spirit provides the Christian with understanding of spiritual truth and guidance in doing what is right. (Romans 8:26-27; 1 Corinthians 2:12; Galatians 5:22-26)

ETERNITY

Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence. (Matthew 10:28; Philippians 2:10)

We can live forever with God in Heaven, a place of ultimate joy, by doing His will; or we can be eternally separated from God in Hell, a place of extreme torment, by refusing to obey Him. (Matthew 7:21; 1 John 5:11-13; Revelation 20:15)

SALVATION

Salvation is a free gift of God. It cannot be achieved through good works of self-improvement because the death of Jesus Christ on the cross is the only sufficient payment for our sins. (John 3:16; Ephesians 2:8-9; Hebrews 9:26-28)

All people have sinned, but all people can be saved. (Acts 2:38-39; Romans 3:23)

Salvation from sin is available to all who obey the teachings of Jesus Christ. (Matthew 19:17; 28:19-20; Luke 11:28; John 14:23)

The teachings of Jesus about salvation include:

  • Believing in Christ’s power to save. (Acts 16:31-33; Galatians 3:2)
  • Confessing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. (Romans 10:9)
  • Repenting of one’s sins. (Luke 13:3; Acts 2:38; 3:19; 17:30)
  • Participating in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ through baptism. (Romans 6:3, 4)
  • Receiving forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit at baptism. (Acts 2:38; Galatians 3:26-29; Titus 3:3-7; I Peter 3:21)
  • Living faithfully by God’s standards. (Romans 14:7, 8; Ephesians 4:1; 2 Peter 3:11; I John 2:24, 25)

THE BIBLE

The Bible is the inspired word of God and is the final authority in life and doctrine. (Psalm 119:105; 2 Timothy 3:16)

It was written by human authors under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit and is without error. (Proverbs 30:5; 2 Peter 1:20-21)

It’s contents reveals God’s character, our purpose, and life’s meaning. (John 20:31)

The Bible’s principles are true for all people, for all places, and for all times. (Psalm 119:160)

THE CHURCH

Jesus Christ established His church for the purpose of spreading His message of hope through word and deed and encouraging Christians to persevere in their faith. (Matthew 16:18; 28:19-20; Ephesians 4:1-16; 5:23; Colossians 1:18, 24)

God adds us to the church at baptism. (Acts 2:41, 47)

Every member is a minister and every Christian is encouraged to find a place of service in the local congregation. (Romans 12:3-8; 1 Peter 2:9)

Each congregation of Christ’s church is designed to be self-governing and ministered to by elders, also called shepherds or overseers, who are men that encourage the spiritual growth of each member and guard the church from teachings that are contrary to the Bible. (1 Timothy 3:1-13; 5:17; 1 Peter 5:1-4)

HUMAN BEINGS

Men and women are made in the spiritual image of God. (Genesis 1:27)

When God created us, He gave us the ability to choose. Unfortunately, we often use our freedom to disobey God, which is sin. This sin separates us from God, placing us in need of a savior—Jesus Christ. (Isaiah 53:6; 59:1-2; Romans 3:23)
